“The highest point in Alabama, Mt Cheaha is a solid climb. At mile 3.3 turn right into the State Park and hit the steepest grade on the climb. The listed climb ends at the marker for the highest point in Alabama.” (This quote is presented with the approval of John Summerson, from his book, The Complete Guide to Climbing (by Bike) in the Southeast, pg. 71.)

CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Mt. Cheah East

Ride 3.7 miles gaining 1,167’ at 5.9% average grade.

Finish this one at the highest point in Alabama at the USGS benchmark in front of Bunker Tower observation point.  The

Climb summary by PJAMM ambassador Dan Razum, San Jose, California.

The climb is mostly on Route 281.  It is a wide road but without shoulders, which is typical for this part of the country.  Traffic is light and there aren't any tight curves, so there is no problem biking it.

The road surface is quite good, the road is well maintained.  We pass through a forest but the trees are a little back from the road so there is less shade than might otherwise be expected.

Most of the climb is on Route 281, only about a half a mile of the climb is in the park. When we reach Cheaha State Park we turn right and enter the park.

There is an entrance fee of $5 per person as of 2022  (2$ for Seniors 62+), which includes cyclists.  After entering the park we ride to the fire tower built on the summit, which is the highest point in the state.

We can walk up the tower to get some nice views from the top.  There is also a small museum next to the tower but it was closed when we visited.

After the summit, we can ride to the back of the park, about a half a mile, and do a 0.3 mile walk to Bald Rock for more scenic views to the north.
